The Science Faculty aims to provide the best possible education for students by developing and delivering a science curriculum that is relevant to students' futures within a changing, technological society.
We are keen to develop students' understanding of how science
plays a part in our surroundings and how it can affect our lives.
This is done through a range of teaching methods that include
investigative, practical, group work and independent research.
KEY STAGE THREE
We are introducing the FUSION scheme of work in year 7, which is designed to meet the requirements of the new National Curriculum. For years 8 to 9 the students follow the SPECRUM scheme which matches the 'old' QCA programme of study for Key Stage 3.Pupils are taught in mixed ability groups, and by subject specialists in year 9.
KEY STAGE FOUR
Most students follow the AQA specification A separate sciences in Biology, Chemistry and Physics leading to the award of two or three GCSE's. These Science GCSEs allow students to progress on to IB-level sciences if desired.
Some students follow the AQA specification A 'Core' science, which leads to the award of one GCSE. This course is not suitable for studying science at any higher level.
The separate science GCSE's are assessed following a similar
scheme:-
• Unit 1a examination - a 36 multiple choice questions, worth 12.5 % of the GCSE.
• Unit 1b examination - 36 multiple choice questions, worth 12.5 % of the GCSE.
• Unit 2 examination - written paper, worth 25% of the GCSE.
• Unit 3 examination - written paper, worth 25% 0f the GCSE.
• CAU - this is coursework, which is based on practical work, and internal practical examinations called ISAs. This is worth 25 % of the GCSE.
The 'Core' GCSE is assessed in the following manner. Most
of the marks come from six multiple choice examinations, each worth
12.5 % of the GCSE.
• Unit 1a Biology examination.
• Unit 1a Chemistry examination.
• Unit 1a Physics examination.
• Unit 1b Biology examination.
• Unit 1b Chemistry examination.
• Unit 1b Physics examination.
• CAU - this is coursework, which is based on practical work, and internal practical examinations called ISAs. This is worth 25 % of the GCSE.
Examinations and ISAs are spread out throughout the two year course. Exact timings of the examinations are posted on our website.
The Science GCSE courses aim to cover contemporary issues such as
global warming, cloning, nuclear technology and health. Students
are encouraged to think critically about how science works.
KEY STAGE 5
The Science Faculty offer standard and higher levels in Biology, Chemistry and Physics as part of the Internal Baccalaureate Diploma.
