In Years 1 and 2, each class receives an hour of music each week. This is split into two half-hour session; one music and one singing. During music lessons the children are introduced to basic musical elements. There is a range of tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments that the children are able to play as part of the lessons.
In singing, the children progress from simple action rhymes and experimenting with their voices, to more complex group singing and composition. All children are encouraged to participate at their own level and to enjoy both music lessons. For those children wishing to take part in more singing, there is a lunch time choir open to Year 2 pupils. The choir performs in the harvest and carol concerts and out of school events when the opportunity arises. There is also the opportunity to sing in the informal Pre-Prep summer concert. The summer concert provides the opportunity for children in the choir or who have peripatetic instrument lessons in school to perform for their families.
