Being an integral part of all academic subjects, English
teaching has an extremely important role in the curriculum and at
Liverpool College we have a whole school approach to ensure there
are strong cross-curricular links, especially with Drama and S.E.N.
We follow the National Curriculum and the National Literacy
Framework is used for planning, but not rigidly adhered to,
allowing for more flexibility when addressing the needs of
different classes. Whole class teaching is used in Years 3 and 4
and setting takes place in Years 5 and 6 to cater for different
learning abilities.
Assessment takes place in the form of annual NFER and OCR tests and
children are tracked throughout the school. Year 6 pupils sit the
SATs exams and English results are always well ahead of results
nationally.
At Liverpool College Prep School we aim to promote love of reading
and of literature and there are many activities over the school
year that highlight this. Every year a Creative Competition is held
and we have had guest speakers to present the prize, such as Brian
Jacques, who presented the prize in 2003. We also hold World Book
Day celebrations in March and children are able to dress up as a
character from their favourite book and submit book reviews.
Children are also strongly encouraged to enter external competitions such as the Brian Jacques writing competition that one of our pupils, Jonathan Russell, now in the Upper School, was a winner of. He was invited to read his story for a local radio broadcast. English Speaking Board examinations are held on an annual basis and these help children to be more confident about speaking in front of an audience as well as promoting poetry and encouraging an enjoyment of poetry recital. Children are also able to enter a number of national competitions for poetry and handwriting held by SATIPs.
