There is a strong tradition of sporting excellence at the
College. Former pupils have captained the England cricket XI, won
international caps for rugby, run in the Olympics and rowed for
both Oxford and Cambridge. While excellence remains the aim, and
current pupils have won regional, national and international
honours, we are keen to encourage sport for all. There are A, B and
C teams in many age groups, and inter-House competitions give all
pupils the opportunity to represent a team at some level.
For girls the main winter sports are hockey and netball, although
football is also growing in popularity. In the summer term
rounders, tennis and athletics become the main activities. For boys
rugby, football, hockey and cricket are the main team sports, with
athletics proving popular in the summer. Other sports include
basketball, badminton, tae kwondo, karate and skiing, although the
list changes termly.
"The opportunities available to all the children are wonderful and give each child the chance to develop in so many areas. Thank you to the staff for their dedication in arranging excellent clubs, trips and holidays"
All pupils have at least three hours of sporting activity a week
and there is an extensive programme of matches with schools across
the northwest. In recent years there have been overseas tours to
Europe, South Africa and the USA. A major tour to New Zealand for
both boys and girls is planned for 2008.
