The Preparatory School is a very successful and popular day school for girls and boys aged from 7 to 11 years. The school has its own buildings within its own extensive grounds on the College campus.

There are two classes in each year group and classes are small. With an average class size of 20 children, our boys and girls enjoy a level of individual attention, which provides challenge and support in all aspects of their study.
Our teachers are our greatest strength. They have high expectations and a commitment to the formation of the whole person. Because of the comparatively small size of the school, every pupil has an opportunity to contribute to the life of our community.
High academic achievement is our primary aim and our results in national tests show that our standards are some of the best in the city and far above average in mathematics and English.

Throughout the school, pupils read and write fluently and intelligently at a level that is often particularly good for their age. The vast majority of our Year 6 leavers move on into the Upper School. Many are offered scholarships after performing well in the 11+ entrance examination.
The curriculum follows the national guidelines but, in addition to the core and foundation subjects, four modern foreign languages are taught: Italian, Spanish, French and Japanese. Dance, ICT, Public Speaking and Debating are also compulsory elements of the curriculum. Regular homework is set at all stages and specialist learning support is available to help any child who is experiencing difficulties or who may be capable of accelerated learning.
There is also a well developed Gifted and Talented programme, which not only benefits pupils in the Prep School but is available to children from across the city.
Sports facilities include extensive playing fields, tennis courts, an astroturf playing surface and large Sports Hall. Specialist games staff coach rugby, cricket, netball, rounders, swimming, cross country, hockey, tennis and athletics. Last year pupils enjoyed success in district, city, regional and national competitions.
Many of the children study musical instruments and there are two thriving choirs and several ensemble groups in the school. Performances in assembly, chapel and in the local community are important features of school life.
During the school year, the children can select from over fifty clubs, ranging from cookery to basketball, from samba band and country dancing to podcasting and rugby. In this way, children have the opportunity to discover and develop their true interests and strengths.
There is also a breakfast club and an after school homework club, which enables children to be supervised until 6pm, completing their homework with teaching staff support and participating in a range of interesting activities.
All independent schools are regularly inspected by national bodies the Independent Schools Inspectorate report, published in 2008, concluded that, in the Prep School:
"..... achievement levels are high overall, but particularly so in English, mathematics, science, modern foreign languages and games. The extra-curricular programme and highly valuable educational visits also play their part in enabling pupils to achieve high educational standards. Good quality and, on occasions, outstanding teaching, a well-balanced curriculum, effective leadership and the excellent relationships that exist within the school, enable considerable achievements to be made by the pupils. In response, pupils have very good attitudes to their learning. They are responsible members of the school community and behave very well. Pupils are very well cared for and excellent provision is made for their personal development. Links with parents and the community are outstanding".
