Music

Welcome to the Prep School music page. The key word is enjoyment. Students are encouraged to enjoy music making - whether they are an accomplished performer or a beginner. Each class receives one hour of class music per week. All the basic musical elements are covered throughout the four years in the Prep School. Students in year three are given the opportunity to learn the violin and recorder in groups as part of their curriculum lessons. All students have access to a variety of tuned and untuned percussion instruments for use in composition work. Students regularly perform their compositions to each other and instrumentalists having private tuition are encouraged to perform in class. Students also perform for children in the Pre-Prep. Throughout the year there are opportunities for students to perform for parents at informal concerts. Everybody is encouraged to take part both beginners and advanced players. The atmosphere is very relaxed and sympathetic to encourage even the most nervous performer. There is also a music festival held every Spring. This is a competitive competition and is judged by an external adjudicator. For details of the 2011 Music Festival - please click here

Extra curricular activities play an important part in Prep School music. There are two choirs - a main school choir which is open to anybody who is keen to sing and a chamber choir - entry to which is by audition only. Both choirs are open to years three to six. The choirs perform in Informal Concerts, Christingle Services and the annual Speech Day. In addition the chamber choir sings in concerts at the Palm House (Sefton Park) and other public events which may occur throughout the year.

Orchestra

There is a school orchestra for instrumentalists and a Handbell group. This group performs regularly at school events and combines the elements of concentration, teamwork and commitment.

Music provides a colourful element both in the curriculum and in the life of the Prep School. The opportunity is there for all to succeed.
