Y6 Spanish Language Leaders

Well done to the pupils who began the Spanish Language Leaders' course this week. Fourteen pupils in Year 6 have taken up the challenge of training to be mini Spanish teachers in just four weeks. Ms Dawn Reardon from the MFL team at Liverpool School Improvement will train the children to devise and deliver a Spanish lesson to our Year 1 pupils. She was very impressed with the pupils in their first session.

Sixth Form Seville Trip

On Friday morning, we headed out early to ‘El Tore Del Oro’ (The Tower Of Gold), an military watchtower from the 13th century which had amazing views overlooking the River Guadalquivir. We took time to look around its Naval Museum at the top of the tower before then heading to another very famous landmark, El Alcazar. We spent hours exploring the huge fortress which was home to a variety of wildlife and it was very fascinating to be able to experience all of the Arabic-inspired architectural features which we had recently been learning about in school. Lastly, we ended the day by visiting Seville’s cathedral – the largest in Spain. We had to climb 35 flights of stairs to reach the top but when we finally got there, the view was very impressive to say the least, providing a suitable ending to a great first day.

Y9 Law Event

Y9 pupils interested in law participating in the Magistrates Court national competition were thrilled to have expert support on Tuesday.

Mr Baker (Solicitor and Judge), Mr Reardon (Detective Chief Inspector of Merseyside Police) and Mr Hughes (Crown Court Defence lawyer) all came into school to provide personalised support to the pupils. Their expertise was incredibly appreciated.

The pupils took part in their first mock trial taking on roles as Magistrates, lawyers, legal advisors, witnesses and ushers. Our sincere thanks to all three parents who gave up their time so generously to support the pupils in this incredibly exciting venture.

Non-Fiction Writing Day in the Prep School

We welcomed Mary Colson to the Prep School this week. Mary is a talented writer specialising in non-fiction. She has written over 50 non-fiction books for children on topics ranging from Einstein, secret codes and the ozone layer to Toni Morrison, sports poetry and Beyoncé. Mary has also written reviews for various publications and literary websites including the TMS theatre awards and The Times.

Mary spoke to all the Prep School about how to write non-fiction texts and then delivered a More Able journalism and non-fiction writing day for Year 6. More Able students from 6 other schools across Liverpool were also invited to attend the workshop. The workshop was absolutely superb - building upon current and breaking stories from events happening in Liverpool. The pupils were incredibly engaged.

Well done to all the pupils for their outstanding enthusiasm and superb, sustained writing skills.

Y7 and Y8 Girls’ Football Update

The Year 7 and 8 girls’ football team have been working extremely hard in training every Friday since the start of the school year to develop their skills and fitness levels in football. Their commitment and attitude to the sessions has been exceptional and it has been a real pleasure coaching and managing the girls.
They have had some difficult fixtures, but have carried themselves with dignity and shown the character traits that we embed into our pupils every single day. In the recent game against Gateacre, the Year 7 team showed great teamwork and battled through to the end, with Phoebe H (Howson’s) producing some fine saves and Maisie-Merle H (Howard’s) coming very close on a few occasions to score from close range. Even though they lost, there were a lot of positives to take away from the game.
With the continued effort and commitment to training, we are confident that the results will come in the second half of the season. We would like to wish the girls a massive good luck for the rest of the season, with many football tournaments and fixtures already in the diary - keep up the good work girls!
