Liverpool College seeks to enable each pupil to pursue their chosen sport to the highest level whilst providing all members of the school with the opportunity to enjoy and experience a variety of physical activities.
The main College sports are rugby, football, hockey and cricket for the boys and hockey, netball and rounders for the girls. The College also competes in tennis and athletics competitions during the summer term. There is a full and competitive fixture list of matches against other independent and local schools. College teams compete in area, regional and national competitions and pupils have been selected in most sports in all representative levels.
The College has recently embarked on sporting tours to Australia, New Zealand and Canada whilst hosting visitors from Australia and Argentina. There are several other tours to the Isle of Man, East Midlands and Scotland.
To support a wide variety of sports, Liverpool College has a large number of active extra-curricular clubs where interest and talent are developed. The Physical Education curriculum introduces pupils to a multitude of sports including athletics, basketball, badminton, Gymnastics, trampolining, fitness and weight training, golf, skiing and outdoor education.
The College makes extensive use of its superb built 35m x 35m sports hall, with aerobics studio and fitness suite. The Fitness Suite run by Body and Mind has in excess of 40 aerobic and weights machines along with a comprehensive range of free weights. A variety of sports are taught on the full size floodlight astro turf pitch. These facilities compliment the excellent games fields that Liverpool College are justifiably proud of.
There are currently two full time members of staff - Mr Alan Gammon and Miss Natalie Hannah. Specialist coaches are employed to lead the coaching of Hockey, Rugby and Rowing. These are Mr John Bell (Director of coaching at Brooklands HC & England U 18s), Mr Michael Roberts (ex Wasps and England 7s player) and Mr Matthew Hackett ( Head coach at Runcorn RC)
Academic Qualifications
The Department currently offer - A2 and AS at GCE level and Full Course and Double Award at GCSE. Candidates study the AQA specification at all levels. Department staff are currently experienced and senior examiners across the specifications studied.

What's on offer?
Aerobics / Dance - this has been an increasingly popular option within both PE and games lessons. Over the past four years, notable success has been gained in Rock Challenge, a national competition.
Athletics is taught to all years 7 - 9 and is offered as a games option and extra curricular activity. Athletes compete in local and national athletic championships and several have achieved county and national selection.
Badminton is taught as part of P E lessons but it is also a games option for Years 10 - 13 as well as an extra curricular club at lunchtimes. It provides an opportunity for pupils who enjoy racquet sports to improve their skills.
Basketball is taught to Years 7 - 9 in PE lessons and as a games option throughout the senior school. Fixtures are made against local schools at senior level.
Cricket is a games option, an extra curricular club and the major team sport of the summer. Fixtures are arranged for all age groups playing against both local and regional opposition. The College enter the Lancashire Schools competitions and have enjoyed much success over the past few years, winning several age groups and representing Lancashire in national competitions. Many boys go on to play representative cricket. Mini tours are regularly organised to the Isle of Man.
Cross-country running is offered as an extra curricular club.
Fitness and Conditioning is offered as part of the health related fitness component within PE Lessons and as a games option. Senior team players are actively encouraged to utilise the excellent facilities and expertise within the Body and Mind fitness suite
Football is the major boy's team sport played in the Lent term and is also offered as a games option in the upper part of the Senior School. It is a popular Sixth Form option in both the Michaelmas and Lent terms. The College has an increasingly challenging fixture list and play in national and regional competitions. The 1st X1 have an annual tour to the East Midlands.
Golf is offered as a games option in years 11, 12 and 13 and there is an annual Old Leopoolians fixture.
Hockey is a games option, an extra curricular club and the major team sport for both girls and boys. The girls have achieved considerable success over recent years and fixtures are arranged for all age groups playing against both local and regional opposition. All girls' teams and the senior boys teams are entered into league competition. Both girls and boys have progress to representative hockey. The girl's hockey teams have recently toured to both Australia and New Zealand, whilst the senior boys compete in the annual Bath festival.
Netball is a major girl's game, a games option and extra curricular club. Girls compete in local and regional leagues and have enjoyed unprecedented success within Liverpool. Many girls have progressed to representing both Liverpool and Merseyside. Netball tours have recently visited Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Scotland and the Isle of Man whilst we have hosted teams from South Africa.
Rugby is the main focus throughout the Autumn term for boys and is offered as a games option and an extra curricular club. Fixtures are played every Saturday during term dates with a demanding fixture list against some of the best schools in the North West and play in national and regional competitions. Many boys progress to representing both Lancashire and Merseyside. The College has embarked on rugby tours to South Africa, Canada and the Isle of Man in recent years
Rounders is a major sport in the summer term for the girl's and they have performed particularly well in the Liverpool leagues between years 7 - 10. This is offered as a games option and extra curricular club
Rowing has been a new addition to the College and is offered as a senior school option and extra curricular activities club. It is run in association with Runcorn Rowing Club and much progress has been made over the past year. Liverpool College will be entering several regatta's throughout the year.
Tai Kwondo -This is offered as an after school club. The college has achieved considerable success over the past five years with several players representing England.

There are opportunities to participate in other sports and physical activities and this is dependent on staffing, transport, availability of facilities and numbers wishing to participate in a particular activity.

The content will address current contemporary topics in sport
such as the impact of technology, commercialisation, ergogenic aids
and barriers to participation. Both As and A2 will study in depth,
skill acquisition, physiological and psychological factors
affecting participation and performance, the organisation and
history of sport and factors affecting training and actual
performance at elite level.
It is hoped that several lectures, visiting speakers and local
trips to sports clubs will be incorporated in the delivery of the
course.
