World Food Day

Posted 16/10/07

On World Food Day, Liverpool College Upper School pupils raised awareness of the global hunger issue.

Following an assembly by Y12 pupils on the World Food Day theme, The Right to Food, an event was organised by students to highlight the issue more dramatically to the whole Upper School community. Admission tickets were handed out at lunchtime to staff members and pupils at the entrance to the College's dining room. On 90% of the tickets was printed a "P" which meant the pupil or staff had only a bowl of rice for lunch (the subsistence food for over half the world's population). For the lucky 10% who drew a ticket with an "R" on though, a dinner of roast chicken with all the trimmings and ice-cream sundaes, served by Y12 Prefects, awaited them.

As Harry Lock, IB Director at Liverpool College explained, the aim of the event was to improve the international understanding and awareness at the College. Pupils who took part, including "P" ticket holder Mykel A (Y10) and lucky Hannah M (Y10) who drew an "R" ticket, agreed that the day had certainly helped raise awareness of the issue of global hunger and hoped that the College would organise the event again next year.

The day did not just result in raising awareness though, as the money saved by the College by not serving the usual lunchtime meals will be donated to charity to help alleviate the suffering of over 800 million people who everyday go hungry and face the inequality in global food distribution that our pupils experienced briefly today.
