Y10 Sustainable Fashion Workshop with International Designer

A number of Y10 GCSE art pupils took part in a Palm House site visit, creative workshop and lecture with Patrick McDowell, an international designer who has worked with Rita Ora, Lady Gaga and M.I.A and who specialises in developing sustainable fashion.

The pupils reported back on their experience:

“I really enjoyed the workshop I thought it was a really good experience to work with a professional artist. It was exciting to see his work as this was an area we have yet to cover. I enjoyed working with others designing and he gave us lots of advice and tips on careers in the fashion industry. Working in the palm house was good to try landscape drawing and use this to link into fashion ideas later that day. It was great to use the palm house cuttings to create and recycle materials.” Rosa A.

“The workshop was fun working with natural materials from the palm house. We learnt new drawing techniques especially when drawing from observation. We tried blind drawing techniques which was challenging and new. A good experience.” Safea A R

“I really liked the structure of the day, collecting research, drawing and gathering ideas. I enjoyed working with others in groups. A unique opportunity.” Alex R

“It was good to recycle materials to create fashion. We received lots of tips and careers advice too, in order to help with our future plans”. Bethany W

“I liked seeing a new artist and their perspective and their style of art and I enjoyed doing a new type of art. Getting out of the class, it made me feel that I wanted to do more work - I got inspiration and wanted to excel. To think about art for a full day was brilliant.” Jude PC
