Senior Rugby Team just miss out on Lancashire Final

The 1st XV played in the 2018 Lancashire Plate Final on Wednesday night against a very strong St Edwards College team.

The conditions could not have been better up at Preston Grasshoppers and their new 4G pitch.

Both sides started well and played some fantastic rugby.  Defence was on top and the tackling and breakdown area was ferocious at times.

St Edwards got their ‘noses ahead’ and then kept our attack ‘at bay’ for the rest of the half.

Midway through the second half after another St Edwards score we then initiated an onslaught of breath-taking rugby for the next 20 minutes.

From 15-0 down we managed to ‘claw’ our way back to 15-10 going in to the final few minutes.

Could this be one of the greatest comebacks in the college’s history, if not the greatest ?

Unfortunately not this time as we simply ran out of time and the final whistle was sounded to the clear relief of the St Edwards players, staff and travelling support.

Our players were distraught but they should be proud of what they did, which was to contribute to a fantastic game of rugby that they will remember forever... and were only minutes away from potentially achieving greatness!

Everyone is very very proud of you, we’ll learn and come back stronger next year.

Mr Smith
