Curriculum Overview

We implement our mission to be a School of Character through our bespoke LCA+ curriculum.

LCA+ is a challenging, broad and engaging curriculum consisting of seven academic and subject strands and seven strands of personal and social education and development.

The strands prepare and equip all pupils with the knowledge, curiosity and personal traits for success in the next phase of their education and life regardless of their background or any disadvantage.

The primary purpose of the curriculum is to develop to the maximum extent the academic and personal potential of each pupil.

Specifically, the LCA+ curriculum aims to create:

  • learners who know more and remember more than the national curriculum and the examination and testing content and specification require;
  • engaged learners who are developing better moral, physical, spiritual, emotional and social habits and dispositions;
  • fluent and confident writers and readers;
  • purposeful learners able to use numeracy and critical thinking skills to ask questions and solve problems;
  • passionate learners who know how they learn and who love to learn.

The Chapter Diploma Award

The Chapter Diploma Award seeks to reward pupils for their increasing understanding and commitment to their own wellbeing and that of others around them throughout their time in each Chapter. It is effectively the means of assessing and recognising success within the LC+ curriculum.

By recognising how each pupil strives for independence and self regulation, how they demonstrate respect both for themselves and for others, and a sense of citizenship within Liverpool College we seek to reward the unique education that we offer beyond their important academic achievements.

Each Chapter’s diploma operates within the same framework of Bronze, Silver and Gold with age appropriate and increasingly challenging expectations as children progress on their journey through Liverpool College.

Click here to download the award criteria at Gold, Silver and Bronze level.

These Diploma Awards are awarded in a Chapter awards ceremony at the end of each academic year. For details of the awards in 2022-23 academic year, please click here

A College of Schools

The College is organized into two phases and five schools.

The Primary Phase consists of the Pre-Prep (Reception-Year 2) and Preparatory School (Year 3-Year 6) and each are housed in their own buildings.

The Secondary Phase consists of the Senior School (Middle School (Years 7-9) and Upper School (Years 10-11)) and the Sixth Form (Years 12-13) which share classroom facilities. The Sixth Form also has its own centre.

Pupils are based in one of six Houses (Brook’s, Butler’s, School, Howard’s, Howson’s and Selwyn’s) for the duration of their educational journey through the College.

The leadership of the College from September 2025 consists of the Principal of the College (Mrs Haynes) who is supported by two Vice Principals (Mrs Pease and Mrs Lines) who are responsible for our educational provision in the primary phase and secondary phase respectively, and by the School Business Manager (Ms Furnival) who is responsible for the financial management of the College and the operation of its core business and support services.

The wider senior leadership team (College Development Group) includes the Head of Boarding  (Mrs Latham) and six Assistant Principals (APs) . Two Assistant Principals have College-wide responsibilities: AP: Safeguarding & Wellbeing (Mrs Duffy) and AP: Inclusion (Mrs O'Meara Day), three Assistant Principals have responsibilities in the secondary phase: AP: Head of Sixth Form (Mr Griffith). AP: LCA Curriculum & Learning (Mrs Ormrod) and AP: LC+ Curriculum & Learning (Mrs Miller) and in the primary phase there is an AP: Deputy Head of Primary (Miss Finnegan).

Our History

The College was founded in 1840 to serve the needs of the growing city of Liverpool. William Ewart Gladstone spoke at the foundation and was one of the founders of the College. Liverpool College was a Founder Members of HMC. In 1929, the College moved to its current site in the leafy suburbs of Mossley Hill. In 1993, the College became fully coeducational by its amalgamation with the independent girls school, Huyton College. In 1999, the College established its coeducational preparatory school for pupils aged between three and eleven, by merging its preparatory and pre-preparatory bases.

In more recent years, the College underwent an ambitious development programme which included a major College-wide refurbishment and restructuring programme, an innovative partnership with the University of Liverpool and the introduction of Sixth Form l boarding. All this was rounded off with an excellent inspection report from ISI in February 2012.

In June 2012, Liverpool College announced that the Secretary of State for Education had accepted their submission to transition the College to Academy status in September 2013 (an academy is an independent school funded directly by central government). This followed a comprehensive and strategic review of the future options for the development of Liverpool College. The government felt that the College's submission, which included an educational plan and vision, would enhance and develop the educational opportunities offered by the College for current and future pupils.

In September 2013, Liverpool College became an all-through academy for pupils aged 4 to 19 years old. The College also offers state boarding provision for pupils in Chapters (Years) 7-13.  In the last few years, it has become one of the most over- subscribed schools in the North of England. It serves the local and wider community, and welcomes applications from parents both within and outside the Liverpool area.

Chaplaincy

Liverpool College is a multifaith community.  The College Chapel is situated at the heart of the school both physically and metaphorically and is used as a place for reflection and development of character for all pupils.

REFLECTION ASSEMBLY

Pupils in Years 1-13 attend Reflection Assembly weekly to explore universal faith themes, sing and reflect on their place in the world. Reflection Assembly also links our school with local faith communities and visiting speakers.  Pupils lead some services as well as serve as Reflection Wardens and Readers.  Reflection Assembly provides an experience of shared values and a basis for the building of an ordered, tolerant and reflective community. Weekly reflection time with pupils, Deans, Form Tutors and the Chaplaincy team inspires personal growth and cements the values that bind us as a community.

Parents are welcome to services periodically through the school year for Harvest Festival, Christingle and leavers’ services. Our links with Liverpool Cathedral and services for Founders Day, Advent and Lent enrich our Communal Worship which takes place a few times in the year in the tradition of our Anglican foundation.

OUR CHAPLAINCY

The chaplaincy is an essential part of the daily life of the school and the Chaplaincy Lead has a central role in delivering and developing its spiritual provision and its mission of service to the community. The chaplaincy is fully inclusive of people from all faiths and none, encouraging an open, honest and friendly dialogue, where all views are respected in a spirit of generous hospitality and mutual learning.

The Chaplaincy team strives to bring awareness of the many faith traditions at Liverpool College through celebrating the diversity of our pupils and staff. The Chaplaincy Room, based in the Upper School, is a welcoming space for the school community to drop in and is also used daily for private Muslim prayer. Chaplaincy is committed to giving pupils the opportunity to explore faith in word and action.

Pupil groups are listed below, and new members are welcome!

Chapters 7-13

The pupil-led Charity Action Group meets weekly to raise awareness of issues such as mental health and arrange school-wide collections for good causes such as Liverpool homeless charities and food banks. Their motto is ‘action and awareness’.

The Muslim Student Experience meets regularly to discuss and support Muslim prayer in the school during lunchtime and breaks, and plan activities such as bake sales.

Rooted is an after-school club that discusses Christian faith and the Bible.

Chapters 3-6

The Mini Vinnies (St Vincent de Paul Society SVP) meet weekly to explore the needs of the community and how we can turn ‘concern into action’ through food bank collections and visits to nursing homes among other outreach activities.

This year in the Prep School, Chaplaincy is starting a Quilting Group to teach basic sewing and patchwork piecing.

PTA

The PTA is planning an Eid party this year for pupils and families.

College Fund

Support Us

Liverpool College provides a transformational education to all its pupils.

We believe in the importance of competitive sports, the arts, leadership and careers education, and participation in cultural events for every pupil at every stage of their education. Providing pupils with the opportunities for a truly holistic education is expensive and the funding we receive from government, the same funding which any other state school receives, does not by itself allow us to deliver the academic and extra-curricular programme we want to deliver for every pupil.

We rely on the generosity of friends of the College, Old Lerpoolians, parents, grandparents, philanthropists, educational reformers, staff, benefactors, foundations and the public at large to support our commitment to deliver an exceptional education and to remain true to the ambitious mission of our school.

Recently the College Fund has contributed to:

  • the development and delivery of an activities programme across all phases of the school;
  • assistance with transport costs for children to attend external fixtures and events;
  • aiding the development of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) and Duke of Edinburgh (DoE) programmes in the senior school;
  • expansion of the house system and inter house competitions and events;
  • rewarding pupils at the annual prize-giving ceremony in the Cathedral as well as other year end events celebrating pupil achievements;
  • subsidising the provision of drama and music opportunities with the delivery of school shows and concerts.

Let us Support You

The College is itself a Charity but we also strive to support our community and the wider world by serving as volunteers and supporting other charities. We often galvanise our College community in the support of good and worthy causes. We raise money for designated charities and our older pupils are eager to serve as volunteers both in specific projects and in on-going capacities.

Year 8 Wilton Scholars Masterclass

On Tuesday Year 8 Wilton Scholars were given a masterclass DNA extraction. Using extractions liquid and ethonol, students were taught how to extract the DNA of a strawberry. They were taught how the shampoo helps to dissolve the cell membranes and how salt added to this breaks up protein chains that hold nuclear acids and releasing DNA strands. Our thanks to Miss Shaw and Mrs Robbin for delivering the superb workshop during their lunch hour. Students described the session as "Incredible and "immensely interesting".
