Y12 Maths Ambassadors

As part of the activity programme within the LCA+ curriculum, Ms Stone has introduced a Maths Ambassadors programme which gives our Sixth Form students plenty of opportunities to display their Lerpoolian characteristics of Purpose, Passion and Challenge:

Maths Ambassadors are a group of Y12 students who have all achieved a Grade 5 or above at GCSE. They help and support Y11 pupils in lessons, help teachers lead activities for Y7 and Y8 Mastery lessons and create their own activities for Prep pupils at the end of each half term. Next week , we are delivering our Maths Christmas Fair in the MV Hall to our Y4 pupils.

In our Thursday activity sessions, the ambassadors learn about leadership. We focus predominantly on how to lead a classroom before moving on to look at the pedagogy of Maths. Sixth Form students become aware of the intricacies of mastering mathematics and appreciate how to facilitate a deep understanding of numbers for pupils at the start of their maths journey.

I deliver sessions on the ‘language that leads to learning’, ‘misconceptions of maths’ and ‘classroom management’. These sessions enable the Y12’s to become ambassadors for the subject and support pupils in younger years to succeed.

A Level Product Design in Action Conference

Our A Level Design Technology students recently attended a Product Design in Action Conference at Warwick University as part of their broad A Level curriculum but it also gave students access to expert and up to date information and advice as they consider careers in the design industry and various related fields. Year 13 pupil Daniel L (Howson's) describes the experience:

We began the conference with a talk by the award winning industrial designer Sebastian Bergne. He stressed to the 800 strong audience of Britain's future innovators, artists and architects that good design should aim to make even the most mundane of everyday objects special. He highlighted the importance of being willing to be flexible and to be able to think outside the box to thrive in such a competitive industry. Once, when approached by a client to design a soap dish that would prevent the soap bar from disintegrating he designed a ring shaped block of soap that would dry by itself when hung from a hook on the wall and therefore would not disintegrate. This kind of thinking, he told us, comes from experience and cannot just be learned in a classroom.

In an era of romanticism, fuelled by the Instagram generation’s eye for the aesthetic, Icelandic product designer Theodóra Alfreðsdóttir reminded us that design is far more than meets the eye, it should tell a story and have a purpose beyond its appearance. Amongst other things we heard from a car designer from Jaguar Land Rover, threw paper aeroplanes at a bucket from across the auditorium and watched a small army of orange robotic arms eerily take over Hull’s old town in the name of “culture”.

Overall it would be safe to say that the lecturers were informative and gave us as students a useful insight into the world of design and its future as an industry.

Year 2 Trip to Bridge Chapel

The pupils all enjoyed their Christmas Journey at Bridge Chapel. First they visited Mary in her home just as Angel Gabriel visited her and tasted some of the bread she had been making. Then they dressed up as shepherds and saw Angel Gabriel on the hillside. In the stable they saw Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus as well as some very funny animals. Finally they heard about the gifts the wise men gave baby Jesus. The children also made a lovely decoration to hang on their tree at home. All the guides at Bridge Chapel commented on how well the children listened and on their lovely manners.

Radio City Toy Appeal

Radio City Visited Pre-Prep on Friday 30th November

A big thank you from Radio City for your kind generosity of the lovely gifts you sent in for the Toy Appeal.
Alison and Courage came to pick up toys on Friday 30th November. These toys will be passed to Father Christmas to give to the children so they have something to open on Christmas morning. All toys donated go directly to children in the Merseyside area – Radio City are grateful for all donations and your gifts will be thankfully received by Social Services and more importantly by, children who would otherwise go without. If you would still like to donate a toy to the appeal you can take your present to any B&M stores, the Radio City Tower or any Police Station.

Marketing and Corporate Videography Workshop

This week Wilton Scholars from Year 7 and 8 participated in a superb business enterprise workshop.

Pupils were asked to team up and create a company name, logo and strap line. They explored the psychology of shopping habits and used these to enhance their creativity when pitching to an audience. Groups were then asked to create an advertising campaign for an everyday product such a rolling pin or ball of string.

Once each team received feedback to hone their presentation skills, they were then given the task of creating a corporate video to promote the school Library. Working directly with a professional videographer, pupils were given advice about lighting, framing and sound management and acoustics. The finished video, which advertises and promotes the different opportunities and resources available within the school library, will be available for viewing on the website shortly.

Well done to all the pupils involved and thank you to Mrs Doran and the Wilton Trust for creating this opportunity for our pupils to put their Lerpoolian learner traits of purpose, passion and challenge into action.

Insight into ‘Upcoming Future Trends in the World of Work’

As part of our extensive careers and STEM programme within the LCA+ curriculum, Year 12 students gained an insight into ‘Upcoming Future Trends in the World of Work’ this week.

Liverpool College was delighted to welcome Prof Atkinson, the Dean of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science at Liverpool University, who delivered a presentation about possible careers involving Computing and emerging technologies.

Prof Atkinson specialises in Artificial Intelligence and Law Tech. She spent time explaining to students the various reasons why they should consider a career involving computing, including sharing facts such as 99% of computing graduates were able to secure a job after leaving university and that computing related jobs was the fourth highest paid sector for graduates in 2018.

We would like to thank Prof Atkinson for giving up her valuable time to share her experiences with the students.
